How to choose a TOEFL tutor online
A good exam tutor does three things: finds what is holding your score back, trains you on the exact tasks you will meet, and gives you feedback you can act on. This guide shows you how to tell whether a tutor does that before you commit.
Start by knowing your weak skill
TOEFL and IELTS both test reading, listening, speaking and writing. Most people are stronger in one and weaker in another. Before you contact a tutor, take a recent practice test and note which part costs you the most marks. Tell the tutor in your first message. A tutor who replies with a plan for that skill is a better sign than one who sends a general list of services.
What to look for on a tutor profile
- Exam experience. Have they prepared students for this exam before, and for which score?
- Their own results. Many exam tutors have taken the test themselves.
- Speaking and writing feedback. Ask how they give it. Written comments, recorded audio or live correction all work, but there should be a method.
- Availability. Check the time zone and whether the tutor can keep the same slot every week.
What to do on a trial lesson
Bring a real task: a speaking answer to record or a short essay you have already written. Watch how the tutor responds. A good one points to two or three specific changes, explains why they matter for the score and gives you something to practise before next time. A weak one only says it is good.
Check the current exam format
Exam formats and scoring change from time to time. Always check the official TOEFL and IELTS websites for the current format before you plan your study. A good tutor will already know it.
How Global Tutor Board works
It is a directory. You browse tutor profiles, send a message through the site, and when you have found a good fit the tutor shares their own contact details. You agree lesson times, price and payment with the tutor directly, and Global Tutor Board takes no commission from your lessons.
Common questions
How many lessons do I need?
It depends on the gap between your current level and your target score, and on how much you practise between lessons. A tutor can estimate it after a trial lesson and a practice test.
Can I prepare for IELTS and TOEFL with the same tutor?
Often yes. The skills overlap, but the task types and scoring are different, so check the tutor has taught the exam you are taking.
