How to find an affordable English tutor online

Online English tutor rates range from about $5 to $60 an hour for lessons that, for most learners, are not that different in value. Here is what drives the price, and how to spend less without settling for a worse teacher.

Why prices vary so much

Platform commission. The large platforms keep 15–33% of every lesson. That is added to what you pay, or comes out of what the tutor earns — either way it inflates the price.
Native vs. fluent non-native. A native speaker from the US, UK or Australia typically charges two to three times a fluent tutor from the Philippines, South Africa or Eastern Europe — often for very similar conversation and exam practice.
Specialisation. Exam coaching, business English and accent training cost more than general conversation.
Experience and demand. A highly-booked tutor with years of reviews charges a premium for the scheduling certainty.

Practical ways to pay less
