How to choose a phonics tutor for your child
Phonics teaches children to connect letters to sounds so they can read new words on their own. A good phonics tutor follows a clear order, keeps lessons short and playful, and checks that each step has stuck before moving on.
What a phonics lesson should include
- Learning letter sounds, not only letter names.
- Blending sounds to read words, for example c, a, t becomes cat.
- Practising sight words that do not follow the rules.
- Short reading practice with words the child can already decode.
- Writing or tracing, so the hand learns the sound too.
What to look for in a tutor
- A clear order: simple sounds first, then blends, then letter pairs such as sh, ch and th.
- Patience with repetition. Young children need to hear the same sound many times.
- Games, flashcards and songs, rather than long worksheets.
- Clear, accurate pronunciation of each sound, without adding an extra "uh" (the sound is "t", not "tuh").
Check progress, not just attendance
After a few lessons, ask your child to read a short word list they have not seen before. If they can sound out the words, the tutor is working. If they only recognise memorised words, ask for more blending practice.
Practise a little each day
Five to ten minutes at home on the sounds from the last lesson does more than one long weekly session. A good tutor will tell you what to practise.
How Global Tutor Board works
It is a directory. You browse tutor profiles and message them through the site, and when you have found a good fit the tutor shares their own contact details. You agree price and payment directly, and no commission is taken from lessons.
Common questions
What age is right for phonics?
Many children begin around four or five, once they enjoy sounds and letters. Older learners who struggle with reading can also benefit.
How long does phonics take?
It varies with the child and with how often they practise. Regular short practice gives steadier progress than occasional long lessons.
