Why Do We Dream?
Everyone dreams, most nights, and mostly forgets. Science still has not fully settled why.
Every night, you have several dreams. Most people forget almost all of them. But everyone dreams, even people who say they do not.
Most dreams happen in a stage of sleep called REM. In this stage, the brain is very active — almost like when you are awake. But your body cannot move, so you do not act out your dreams.
Scientists are not completely sure why we dream. There are a few ideas. One idea is that dreams help the brain sort and save memories from the day. Another idea is that dreams are practice for dangerous or difficult situations, in a safe place. A third idea is that dreams help us deal with strong emotions.
Some people can control their dreams. They know they are dreaming and can change what happens. This is called lucid dreaming. Most people cannot do it, but you can learn.

Dreaming is one of the most familiar human experiences and one of the least understood. We do it most nights, in several episodes, and forget the great majority within minutes of waking.
Vivid dreaming is concentrated in REM sleep, a stage in which the brain is nearly as active as during waking, while the muscles are temporarily paralysed — a safety mechanism that stops us from physically acting out what we dream. What that intense activity is for remains debated.
Several theories coexist rather than compete. The memory-consolidation account holds that during dreaming the brain replays and reorganises recent experience, strengthening useful connections and integrating new information with old. The threat-simulation theory proposes that dreams let us rehearse responses to danger and social conflict in a consequence-free environment. A third view emphasises emotional processing: dreaming may strip the sharp emotional charge from difficult memories while keeping the information, which is why an upsetting event can feel more manageable after a night's sleep.
A small number of people regularly experience lucid dreams, in which they become aware that they are dreaming and can sometimes direct the plot. It can be trained, and researchers use it to study the dreaming brain from the inside.

That we dream is beyond dispute; why we dream remains genuinely open, which is unusual for a phenomenon this universal and this available to study. Nearly everyone dreams, several times a night, and forgets almost all of it — a pattern that is itself a clue, though not an unambiguous one.
The neurophysiology is partly settled. The most vivid narrative dreaming occurs during REM sleep, when cortical activity approaches waking levels while the brainstem imposes near-total muscular atonia. The evolutionary logic of that paralysis is clear enough: an animal that physically enacted its dreams would be dangerously exposed. The harder question is what the activity itself accomplishes.
The leading explanations are best read as complementary rather than rival. On the consolidation account, dreaming reflects the offline replay and reorganisation of memory traces, weighting the salient and discarding the trivial, and knitting new material into existing schemas. The threat-simulation hypothesis, drawing on the disproportionate frequency of anxious and adversarial content in dream reports, casts dreaming as low-cost rehearsal for the social and physical challenges our ancestors faced. The affect-regulation view holds that REM dreaming decouples the emotional tone of an experience from its factual content, allowing the memory to be retained while its sting is attenuated — a mechanism whose failure has been proposed as a factor in conditions marked by intrusive, undimmed memories.
Lucid dreaming, in which metacognitive awareness is somehow retained inside the dream state, offers researchers a rare window: a subject who can, on cue, signal to the outside world from within a dream. It has moved the study of consciousness a little closer to something testable.
