Interview English

Professional Vocabulary & Phrases for Interviews

Sound more natural and professional in English-language interviews with these common words and phrases.

Talking about your experience

Instead of simply saying "I did" something, professional English often uses more precise verbs: oversaw a project (managed it), spearheaded an initiative (led it from the start), streamlined a process (made it more efficient), collaborated with a team (worked closely together), and was responsible for a specific area.

Talking about achievements

Useful phrases: "I successfully delivered the project ahead of schedule," "I played a key role in increasing sales by 20%," "I was recognized for my work on...", "This resulted in a significant improvement in..."

Talking about challenges and weaknesses

Softer, more professional framing: "I found it challenging to..." (rather than "I was bad at..."), "I'm actively working on..." (shows ongoing improvement), "an area I've been developing is..." (frames a weakness as a growth area).

Ending the interview professionally

Useful closing phrases: "Thank you for taking the time to speak with me today," "I'm very enthusiastic about this opportunity," "I look forward to hearing from you," "Please let me know if you need any further information."
