Behavioral Interview Questions: The STAR Method

A simple structure for answering "Tell me about a time when..." questions clearly and convincingly.

What are behavioral questions?

Behavioral questions ask you to describe a real past situation, based on the idea that past behavior predicts future behavior. They usually start with phrases like "Tell me about a time when..." or "Give me an example of...".

Common topics include: handling conflict, making a mistake, leading a team, dealing with a difficult deadline, and solving a problem with limited information.

The STAR structure

STAR stands for Situation, Task, Action, Result — a four-part structure that keeps your answer focused instead of rambling.

• Situation — briefly set the scene. Where were you, what was the context?
• Task — what was your specific responsibility or goal in that situation?
• Action — what did you specifically do? (Not "we" — the interviewer wants to know your contribution.)
• Result — what happened? Use numbers or concrete outcomes where possible.

Example: "Tell me about a time you dealt with a difficult coworker."

Situation: "In my last job, I worked closely with a colleague who often missed shared deadlines, which affected my own work." Task: "I needed to find a way to keep our project on track without damaging the working relationship." Action: "I asked to meet privately, explained how the delays were affecting me specifically, and we agreed on a shared checklist with earlier internal deadlines." Result: "We didn't miss another deadline for the rest of the project, and it actually improved how we communicated generally."

Common mistakes to avoid

Spending too long on the "Situation" and running out of time for the "Result" is the most common mistake. Aim to spend the least time setting the scene and the most time on your specific actions and the outcome. Also avoid choosing an example where the result was genuinely bad — pick one where you learned something or the outcome was ultimately positive.
