GTB Dictation trains the skill that most English tests and classrooms ask for and most apps skip: hearing a sentence and writing it down correctly. A voice says the sentence, it appears for a few seconds, then it vanishes into blanks and you type it from memory. Spelling, listening and short-term memory get trained together.

Who it is for

Beginners learning to type their first words, school pupils working on spelling, adults preparing for an English exam, and teachers who want a dictation exercise their students can do alone. There are 13 levels, from single words and word pairs through pre-A1 and A1 up to long, advanced sentences, and over 2,600 sentences in all.

How it works

1. Listen to the sentence, as many times as you like.
2. Read it while it is on the screen.
3. It vanishes. Type it from memory.
4. Every word is checked, and you see what you got right and what to fix.

Questions

Will I see the same sentence twice? Not until you have been through the whole level. Every learner gets their own order.

Can I try it first? Yes, the first sentences of the early levels are free to play.

Does it work on a phone? Yes, on phones, tablets and computers.
